    1. List Of Tv Shows 1950s

In the 1940s, TV was in its infancy. That becomes evident when you know that in 1946 (the earliest year for which I have records) there were a total of 2 National Networks: NBC and THE DU MONT NETWORK. It's even clearer when you learn that you can count ALL the Network Programs on your fingers and toes, and have toes left over!

(There were a total of 15 programs!). Since I have no first hand knowledge of these shows, (I was born in 1950), I used the following as my source:, and I verified them using. Here's a great site offering 'HARD TO FIND VIDEOS':.

Law & Order, the longest running crime series and the second longest-running drama series in the history of American broadcast television, started its 18th season on NBC in the winter of 2008.

The brainchild of creator Dick Wolf, Law & Order is the most successful brand in the history of primetime television; the winner of the 1997 Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series, it ties Cheers and M.A.S.H for the most consecutive best series nominations (eleven) and the longest-running drama series currently on American television. The series has also turned into one of entertainment's preeminent brands using a distinct ripped from the headlines format, and has spawned the successful spinoffs Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Crime & Punishment, Law & Order: Trial by Jury and Law & Order: Los Angeles. Filmed entirely in and around New York City, this realistic yet fictional drama looks at crime and justice from a dual perspective. Law & Order has been renewed through 2009 and delivers some of the highest ratings on television, ranking fourth for any drama on any network among adults 18-49 for the past four full seasons. Season-to-date, the show remains a top-25 series among adults 18-49, a top-20 series in total viewers and one of the most upscale dramas on television. Law & Order was also television's #5 drama in overall total viewers for the 2003-04 season with an average of 15.9 million viewers.

The acclaimed crime drama has chased away more than 20 competing dramas from the Wednesday (10-11 p.m. ET) hour since moving to that time period in 1992-1993.

In 2006, after nearly fourteen years of airing at 10:00 PM, the series was moved to 9:00 PM to make room for the new NBC series Heist. After only two weeks, NBC opted to return the show to its 10:00 P.M. Timeslot after the show fared poorly at 9:00 P.M. More less. Created by writer/producers (of ) and (of ) comes The Big Bang Theory, a sitcom that shows what happens when hyper-intelligent roommates/physicists Sheldon and Leonard meet Penny, a beautiful woman moving in next door-and realize they know next to nothing about life outside of the lab.

Rounding out the crew are Howard Wolowitz, who thinks he's as sexy as he is brainy, and Rajesh (Raj) Koothrappali, who suffers from an inability to speak in the presence of a woman. The show distinguishes itself by being unafraid to toss scientific references and technobabble into an otherwise standard sitcom, even employing a physicist to keep things accurate.

In doing so, it allows Sheldon and Leonard to do for science what Frasier's Crane brothers did for fine dining, art, and opera. Theme Song: 'The History of Everything' by Barenaked Ladies.

The series won 10 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series -, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series -, Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Series -, Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series -:, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series -, Outstanding Multi-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series -, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series -, Outstanding Multi-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series -, Outstanding Multi-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series - and Outstanding Multi-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series -. From murder and espionage to terrorism and stolen submarines, these special agents traverse the globe to investigate all crimes with Navy or Marine Corps ties. Leading this team that operates outside of the military chain of command is Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), a skilled investigator and interrogator who is smart, tough and willing to bend the rules to get the job done. Working under Gibbs is Special Agent Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), a former homicide detective who has instincts that can come only from working on the streets.

Joining them is Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), a gifted forensics specialist whose dark wit matches her goth-style hair and clothes, and Dr. Donald 'Ducky' Mallard (David McCallum), a medical examiner. In season three, the NCIS team welcomed Mossad Agent Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), who took Kate's place in the team, and the NCIS team got a new director, Jenny Shepard (Lauren Holly). After Holly's departure at the end of Season 5, the position of the NCIS director was taken over by Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll). More less. SpongeBob SquarePants is one of Nickelodeon's highest-rated cartoons for children and a staple of American television.

It was created by marine biologist during his tenure as a teacher at the Ocean Institute in California. The show follows the adventures of an eternally optimistic sea sponge named SpongeBob who works at a fast food restaurant, attends a boating school, and lives in an underwater pineapple. The program stars a colorful cast of ten main characters and takes place in the subsurface town of Bikini Bottom. The series won 4 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program, Outstanding Sound Editing - Animation, Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program - for playing SpongeBob SquarePants and Outstanding Children’s Animated Series.

Characters SpongeBob SquarePants - The main character of the series and a selfless creature whose sunny attitude is his trademark. He works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, Bikini Bottom's premier daytime eatery. He is known throughout town for the delicious Krabby Patty burgers he makes. SpongeBob is perpetually enrolled in boating school, the underwater equivalent of a driver's education course. He lives in a submerged pineapple home with his pet snail Gary. Krabs - SpongeBob's boss at the Krusty Krab. He lives in an anchor with his teenage daughter, Pearl the whale.

Krabs often acts as a fatherly figure to SpongeBob, he is very cheap and frequently lets his obsession with money cloud his judgment. He loves sailing, talks like a pirate, and is in a romantic relationship with SpongeBob's teacher Mrs. Squidward Tentacles - A snobbish octopus who is SpongeBob's next-door neighbor and coworker at the Krusty Krab. He is pessimistic and despises SpongeBob for his enthusiastic attitude.

Squidward's favorite hobby is playing his clarinet, but he is not very skilled at it. He also fancies himself a talented artist and keeps countless self portraits around his house.

Patrick Star - Patrick is a pink starfish who is SpongeBob's best friend. He is dimwitted and clueless when it comes to almost anything; after all, he lives under a rock. He is always quick to give SpongeBob unintentionally bad advice that lands them both in trouble. Despite his obliviousness to the world around him, Patrick is enduringly loyal and generally good-natured. Plankton - The arch-rival of Mr.

Krabs and the owner of a failing rival restaurant called the Chum Bucket. With the help of his sentient computer Karen, Plankton is always trying to steal the Krusty Krab's secret recipe for Krabby Patties. SpongeBob has a knack for unintentionally thwarting Plankton's efforts without even trying. Karen Plankton - Plankton's sidekick and wife who supplies him with his evil schemes. She is a computer system that he builds into most of his diabolical inventions. Most of the time, Karen manifests on a screen in the Chum Bucket laboratory or in a mobile robot body.

She usually acts as Plankton's voice of reason. Sandy Cheeks - A thrill-seeking cowgirl squirrel from the state of Texas who wears a diving suit and lives in a dome full of air. She has a passion for extreme sports and enjoys practicing karate with SpongeBob. When she is not searching for adventure, Sandy can be found working as a scientist and inventor. Puff - SpongeBob's teacher at the town boating school and the girlfriend of Mr. She tries her best to be patient with SpongeBob, as he is her most enthusiastic student, but finds his reckless boat-driving exhausting. SpongeBob has failed her class more times than she can count, but he only seems to grow more passionate about driving with each failure.

Pearl Krabs - A teenage whale who is Mr. Krabs' beloved daughter. She will inherit the Krusty Krab when she grows up, but she doesn't know or care much about fast food at all.

Pearl is clever for her age, especially when it comes to math or getting money from her father, but she is still immature. Gary the Snail - SpongeBob's pet sea snail who communicates through cat-like meows and other unintelligible noises. Surprisingly, he is the most civilized member of the cast and outsmarts his owner on a regular basis. He leaves a trail of sticky slime wherever he goes. More less.

Welcome to The Bill guide at TV.com. The Bill recounts the goings-on within and around Sun Hill, a Metropolitan Police Station located in the fictional Borough of Canley, in east London. Running for over 25 years, The Bill was Britain's longest running police drama series, finally outstripping on 10 August 2005. It adapted to meet the challenges of the highly competitive world of independent television, evolving from a standard post-watershed police procedural drama, through a period as a twice- and, later, thrice-weekly early evening ratings grabber with stand-alone plots, then as a twice-weekly one-hour drama with ongoing soap-style exploration of the troubled personal lives of its police officers. The Bill reverted to a once a week, post-watershed drama on 23 July 2009, but ITV decided not to renew the show when the contract came up for renewal the following year. The Bill is not your average cop show, but rather an extraordinary police drama that brings each episode to the audience through the eyes of the characters.

An excellent cast, supported by some of the country's leading writers and directors and some innovative camera work gives an incredible sense of realism. Other police dramas have been created in an attempt to mirror its conventions and match its success, but none has lasted.

The Bill truly deserves its accolade as Britain's most successful police drama. More less. 'With a Little Help From My Friends' is a song written by the Beatles (and expertly covered by Joe Cocker) and it could easily be the subtitle for the thirty minute comedy, 'Friends'.

In 1994, the idea was created for 'Friends': a show about six friends in New York as they navigate their way through life and learn to grow up as they approach their thirties. All, with the help from each other to get them through the obstacles that life naturally has for us.

Monica is the excessively neat and organized 'older sister' of the group, who works as a chef while yearning to find her ideal love. Ross, Monica's older brother, is a paleontologist with a lifelong crush on Rachel. He is a laid-back man with low self esteem and a recent divorcee. Rachel is the pretty, bubbly girl who spent most of her life as a spoiled rich princess. Now she must learn to face the real world. Chandler is Ross' college buddy and the guy who will crack jokes at a moment's notice.

Phoebe is a lovable eccentric masseuse who easily could have fit in with Haight Ashbury in the 1960s. And then there's Joey, the friend who has an inverse relationship between his good looks and his intelligence.

He dreams of becoming an actor. These six individuals make up the cast of Friends. In May 2004, Friends officially ended it's phenomenal 10 year run. The show's time slot was taken over by a spin-off called Joey.

More less. The show starring Steve Forrest was a spinoff of The Rookies. The show produced 39 episodes, 2 of which were really episodes of The Rookies that served as the pilot.

The show ran from February 1975 until April 1976. Also starring was Robert Urich (who went onto star in Soap in September 1977), and Mark Shera.

Thanks to hit programs like Adam-12, the cop show rose to a new level of prominence during the 1970's. There were several badge-flashing action dramas over the course of the decade, but perhaps none as interesting (or controversial) as S.W.A.T., a program inspired by the real-life crime-control units that rose to prominence in the U.S. After the civil disturbances of the late 1960's. Although its brutal level of action ensured that it had short life on television, S.W.A.T.

Became an impressive success during its short run and continues to be a cult favorite today. Is an acronym for the 'Special Weapons And Tactics' unit, which was an elite five-man team of police officers who dealt with situations that were too dangerous for the police force to handle. Each had a specific job: Lt. Harrelson called the shots as the group's commanding officer, Sgt. Kay was the group's scout and Officer McCabe was the resident marksman. Each was also a Vietnam veteran, so they all adopted a military style (navy-blue fatigues) and used a combat mentality to deal with the problems they faced.

During the show's run, the S.W.A.T. Team had no shortage of psychos and crazies to deal with-everything from snipers to Satanists to scuba-diving jewel thieves. Also had to deal with being the direct targets of these bad guys-Street dated a woman whose last few boyfriends were killed by a sniper in 'The Bravo Enigma,' and a family of criminals targeted the entire S.W.A.T. Team for extinction in 'Kill S.W.A.T.' No matter who was plotting to kill whom, you could count on plenty of mayhem each week as the S.W.A.T. Rolled from destination to destination in their specially-equipped van to dispense justice the hard way. 's combination of cool cops and brutal action made it a popular choice when it hit the airwaves in 1975.

The show even produced a radio hit when its orchestral-funk theme song, performed by Rhythm Heritage, became a Top-10 smash on pop radio. Everyone loved the show except the critics.

Media pundits regularly attacked the show for its high level of violence, the 'shoot first, ask questions later' mentality of the heroes, and the fact that its heroes often dealt out more violence than the foes they were dealing with. The controversial but popular show enjoyed a two-season run before quietly disappearing from the television schedule in the summer of 1976. Today, S.W.A.T. Periodically pops up in reruns and garners an enthusiastic response from the former kids who grew up on its tales of urban-guerrilla warfare. The show was even remade as an action epic for the movie theaters starring Samuel L. Jackson and Colin Farrell. Whether the remake was a success or not, one thing is certain: S.W.A.T.

Has earned its place in television history as one of the most memorably intense cop shows of all time. (Extra info courtesy of YesterdayLand) more less. Sick, twisted, politically incorrect and freakin' sweet.

The animated series features the adventures of the Griffin family. Peter and Lois have three kids - the youngest is a brilliant, sadistic baby bent on killing his mother and world domination. Chris, like his father, is obese, has a low IQ and no common sense. Meg desperately tries to be part of the popular crowd, and is coldly rebuffed.

Their talking dog Brian keeps baby Stewie in check while sipping martinis and sorting out his own life issues. After being canceled in 2002, having an outstanding performance in DVD sales and syndication ratings that beat late-night talk shows, its cult status reached great heights.

As a result, the series was added back to the FOX Summer 2005 line-up. Family Guy returned to the small screen with new episodes on Sunday, May 1st, 2005. A DVD Movie was released in September of 2005. Family Guy has won 3 Emmy awards and 3 Annie awards. More less. 'Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!' At first it was Regis and Kathie Lee. In late July 2000 Kathie Lee Gifford left the show, from that point till Febuary 2001 the show was known as ' Live with Regis '.

Regis had a different co-host each day until they found the perfect co-host, Kelly Ripa. The show airs every morning from the WABC studios in New York City. Regis Philbin, who has become a cultural icon in television broadcasting, was honored with a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host in May 2001 for 'Live With Regis and Kelly'. Joining the show on February 12, 2001, Kelly Ripa's endearing personality quickly won the hearts of Americans from coast to coast when she joined the show in February 2001.

Bewitched is a fantasy sitcom chronicling what happens when a witch and a mortal fall in love and get married in 1960s and '70s suburban America. At the very center of the show is Elizabeth Montgomery's portrayal of a good-hearted witch named Samantha.

A strong, independent woman with the world at her finger tips (or at the twitch of her nose), she gives up her witchly life to do things the 'mortal way'. Her mortal husband Darrin Stephens (played by Dick York, and later Dick Sargent) is a talented advertising executive with McMann & Tate. He obsesses with leading a 'normal life' where one works hard to earn a good living for one's family.

He constantly struggles against disapproving witches and warlocks, like Samantha's powerful mother, Endora (played by Agnes Moorehead). Endora is determined to prove to Samantha that the mixed-marriage marriage is a tremendous mistake. Over the show's eight year run, Endora tries numerous spells, all creating humiliation and chaos in Darrin's mortal world. This often ends up affecting Darrin's money-obsessed boss and best friend, Larry Tate (played by David White). Larry's wife, Louise (played by Irene Vernon and Kasey Rogers), is Samantha's best friend, although she is unaware that Sam is a witch. In season two, life changes dramatically when Samantha and Darin give birth to daughter Tabitha Stephens (played by five babies that season and by twins Erin and Diane Murphy starting in season three).

Many early Tabitha episodes revolve around whether she is a witch or mortal until the big reveal in season three. Later in season six, the Stephenses give birth to a boy, Adam. Although less airtime is spent on his character, eventually audiences find out that he too has powers. Recurring characters include Samantha's favorite aunt, Clara, who is a lovable, bumbling witch (played by Marion Lorne).

Due to Aunt Clara's extended age, she is suffering the loss of her powers and inadvertently wreaks havoc at the Stephens home. Also often wreaking havoc are Samantha's practical joking Uncle Arthur (Paul Lynde), her Shakespeare orating father, Maurice (Maurice Evans), a bad joke-telling witch doctor, Dr. Bombay (Bernard Fox) and a shy witch-maid Esmeralda (Alice Ghostley). Elizabeth Montgomery also portrays Samantha's free-spirited, mischievous twin cousin, Serena.

On the mortal receiving end of the seemingly hallucinogenic world of witches are neighbors Gladys and Abner Kravitz. Gladys, first portrayed by Alice Pearce and later by Sandra Gould, was immediately aware that the Stephens household was positively strange, and was certain that something 'beyond this world' was at work across the street. Abner (George Tobias) never believes it.

Darrin's mother, Phyllis Stephens (Mabel Albertson), fairs no better, as she is forever witnessing zany antics only to have her husband, Frank Stephens (Robert F. Simon and later Roy Roberts) not believe it. Bewitched earned nearly two dozen Emmy nominations during its run. Marion Lorne and Alice Pearce won well deserved awards, as did director and producer, William Asher (Elizabeth Montgomery's husband at the time). In 1970, Bewitched presented a Christmas episode regarding bigotry and racism, and received a special Emmy, the Governor's Award, for the landmark episode 'Sisters at Heart'.

Beyond the theme of bigotry and 'mixed-marriages', the series explored cultural issues of consumerism, materialism, human vanity, women's liberation, and mass hysteria. Season six of Bewitched brought about the biggest change to the series as Dick York was replaced by Dick Sargent in the role of Darrin. This element of the show has become a cultural touchstone, with many viewers debating their favorite Darrin.
